How to read this page. Every figure below names its source and the month or period it refers to, and the prices are as of October 2026. We use official statistics (INE, the BOE), regulated tariffs, the transport operators' own fares and named market reports. We do not use crowd-sourced sites such as Numbeo as fact. Where we had to calculate something, we show the sum. Where we could not verify a figure, we say so instead of guessing. Checked on 6 October 2026.
Valencia is cheaper to live in than Madrid or Barcelona, and the gap is almost entirely rent: electricity, telecoms and most food cost the same across Spain. This guide answers the cost-of-living question with numbers you can check: a monthly budget for a single person, a couple and a family of four, built line by line from official statistics, regulated tariffs, the city's own bus fares and named rent reports, with the sum shown. It is written for people who live in Valencia or are about to.
How Much Does It Cost to Live in Valencia in 2026?
For the essentials, a single person renting their own one-bedroom flat in Valencia needs about 1,221 to 1,681 euros a month, and a couple about 1,429 to 1,889 euros, as of October 2026. A room in a shared flat brings a single person down to about 608 euros plus a share of the bills, and a family of four in a three-bedroom flat needs about 2,385 to 3,145 euros. Rent is most of it. These are our sums of the cited costs below (rent, electricity, water and waste, internet, food at home and public transport), not a survey of what people spend, and they exclude eating out, schooling and leisure. In Valencia the water line covers only the two waste taxes, so add your own water bill on top.

| Item | EUR a month | Where the number comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Rent, three-bedroom flat (100 m²) | 1,440 to 2,200 | Fotocasa, July 2026: Patraix 16 EUR/m² to Ruzafa 20 EUR/m², x 100 m², plus or minus 10 percent |

| Total | 2,385 to 3,145 | The arithmetic: Low end: 1,440 + 104 + 11 + 38 + 752 + 40 = 2,385. High end: 2,200 + 104 + 11 + 38 + 752 + 40 = 3,145. |
Not included: school or nursery fees, extracurricular activities, private health insurance, a car, clothes, eating out and holidays. Each can add hundreds of euros a month, which is why this is a floor for the essentials, not a lifestyle budget. It is also why our Moving to Valencia guide gives a higher all-in figure of about 1,400 to 2,000 EUR a month for a single person: that one includes eating out a few times a week.
How Much Is Rent in Valencia in 2026?
Advertised rent in Valencia city runs from about 16 euros per square metre in barrios such as Patraix to 20 to 21.5 in Ruzafa, Campanar and L'Eixample (Fotocasa, July 2026). That puts a 60 m² one-bedroom at roughly 860 to 1,320 euros a month and a 100 m² three-bedroom at roughly 1,440 to 2,200 euros, depending on the barrio. A room in a shared flat averages about 400 euros.
| What | EUR a month | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Room in a shared flat | 400 | idealista, Valencia, Q1 2025 (asking). This is older than our other figures, so expect to pay more in 2026 |
| One-bedroom, 60 m², Patraix (16 EUR/m²) | 860 to 1,060 | Fotocasa, July 2026 (asking), plus or minus 10 percent |
| One-bedroom, 60 m², Ruzafa or Campanar (20 EUR/m²) | 1,080 to 1,320 | Fotocasa, July 2026 (asking), plus or minus 10 percent |
| One-bedroom, 60 m², L'Eixample (21.5 EUR/m²) | 1,160 to 1,420 | Fotocasa, July 2026 (asking), plus or minus 10 percent |
| Three-bedroom, 100 m², Patraix to Ruzafa | 1,440 to 2,200 | Fotocasa, July 2026 (asking), plus or minus 10 percent |
| Signed-contract medians, metro towns | 616 (Bétera) to 778 (Alboraya) | SERPAVI, Ministerio de Vivienda, 2024 contracts |
These are the same figures as our renting in Valencia guide and the where to live in Valencia area pages, which break them down area by area. The renting guide also covers deposits, contract length, the agency fee (paid by the landlord) and the rent-update index. Budget against the asking price if you are signing a new contract: the official signed or declared figures include old contracts and every flat size, which is why they run lower.
How Much Are Electricity, Gas and Water in Valencia?
Expect roughly 104 euros a month for electricity on the regulated tariff, as of autumn 2026; water and waste come to about 11 euros a month in waste taxes, plus the water itself. Electricity and gas prices are national; water and waste are set locally.
| Item | Price | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Electricity, average regulated-tariff (PVPC) bill | 104.31 EUR a month | FACUA, September 2026 bill for its average user (4.4 kW contracted, 366 kWh a month, as reported in the press). FACUA put the September 2025 bill at 81.49 EUR. |
| VAT on household electricity | 21 percent | Real Decreto-ley 25/2026 (BOE, 29 September 2026): the temporary 10 percent rate did not apply in September and has ended, though the government may restore it for November and December 2026 if prices rise further |
| Electricity tax (impuesto especial) | 5.11 percent | Standard rate, Real Decreto-ley 25/2026 |
| Piped gas, regulated tariff TUR.1 (up to 5,000 kWh a year) | 3.83 EUR a month fixed + 5.25 cents per kWh, before taxes | Resolución DGPEM of 30 September 2026, BOE of 1 October 2026, prices from 1 October 2026 |
| Piped gas, TUR.2 (5,001 to 15,000 kWh a year) | 8.17 EUR a month fixed + 5.04 cents per kWh, before taxes | Same resolution, from 1 October 2026 |
| Butane bottle (12.5 kg) | 1.234 EUR per kg before taxes, about 18.8 EUR a bottle in press reports | Resolución DGPEM of 8 September 2026 (BOE, 14 September 2026), in force from 15 September 2026; next revision due mid-November |
| City waste tax (ecotasa), new from 2026, on the water bill | 90.59 EUR a year on average; 39 EUR a year up to 65 m³, 122 to 272 EUR above | Ajuntament de València figures as reported by elDiario.es, 19 January 2026 |
| Metropolitan waste fee (TAMER, EMTRE) | 46.10 EUR a year for homes using up to 65 m³ of water a year; 132.50 EUR for 65 to 90 m³ | EMTRE ordinance, BOP València no. 246 of 24 December 2025, from 1 January 2026 (base fees before a small per-municipality deduction) |
| Water supply (Global Omnium / EMIVASA) | Not verified | We could not reach the 2026 tariff on the operator's site, so we do not print a price |
Gas is not in the budgets above because many flats in Valencia have no piped gas and run on electricity alone. If yours has gas, add the fixed charge plus your usage. The October 2026 gas tariff rose sharply: Real Decreto-ley 25/2026 capped the rise in the raw-material part at 35 percent and carries the rest forward to revisions from January 2027, so expect another increase then.
Valencia households now pay two waste charges: the city's new ecotasa, which averages 90.59 euros a year, and the metropolitan TAMER, 46.10 euros a year for a typical flat. Together that is 136.69 euros a year, about 11 euros a month, which is the line in the budgets above. The water itself is missing from that line because we could not verify the 2026 water tariff from the operator, so add your own bill. The city offers ecotasa discounts, 30 percent for large families and low incomes according to the same report; the application deadline for 2026 was 31 May 2026, so ask about the 2027 window.
How Much Does Public Transport Cost in Valencia?
The cheapest everyday option in Valencia city is the EMT Bonobús: 10 bus trips for 5.10 euros in 2026, 40 percent off the full 8.50 euros, so 40 trips a month cost about 20 euros. Under-30s get unlimited EMT buses for 12.50 euros a month with EMT Jove, and children under 14 ride free.
| Ticket | Price | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| EMT Bonobús, 10 trips | 5.10 EUR (full price 8.50) | Ajuntament de València, 23 December 2025, announced for the first half of 2026 |
| EMT Bonobús Personalitzat, 10 trips | 4.10 EUR; 2.55 EUR for large and single-parent families | Same |
| EMT Jove, under 30, unlimited a month | 12.50 EUR | Same, 50 percent discount |
| Children under 14 | Free on EMT, Metrovalencia and SUMA services | Ajuntament de València and Generalitat, 2026 |
| SUMA passes (metro, tram, EMT, MetroBus, Cercanías) | At least 40 percent off general passes, 50 percent off youth passes, to 31 December 2026 | Generalitat Valenciana, extension agreed 26 June 2026 |
| Abono Único, national 30-day pass (Cercanías and state trains and coaches only) | 60 EUR, 30 EUR under 26 | La Moncloa, from 19 January 2026 |
Two things we could not pin down. First, the city's announcement of the EMT prices covered the first half of 2026 and we found no announcement for July to December, so confirm the Bonobús price at a kiosk. Second, we could not reach the official SUMA price table: fare aggregators list the monthly SUMA at 35 euros per zone before the discount, which would make it about 21 euros with 40 percent off, but treat that as unconfirmed. Valencia does not receive the state's 20 percent bus subsidy because it has no low-emission zone with fines in force, so the city pays the EMT discount itself.

How Much Do Groceries Cost in Valencia?
A useful official anchor is about 188 euros a month per person for food and non-alcoholic drink at home. That is our arithmetic from the INE household budget survey for 2025: Spanish households spent 5,626 euros a year on food, and the average household spent 35,101 euros in total against 14,066 euros per person, which means 2.5 people per household. 5,626 / 2.5 / 12 = 188 euros. It is a national average from 2025, so it does not capture local price differences, and food prices have kept rising since: they were up 2.3 percent in the year to August 2026 (INE consumer price index).
Where you shop moves the bill more than the city does. The consumer organisation OCU's 2026 supermarket survey (prices collected April to May 2026, published 25 September 2026) put the average household's spend on its basket at 6,602 euros a year and found that switching from the dearest to the cheapest shop in the same city saves 1,310 euros a year on average. Valencia comes out well: the three cheapest places to shop in Spain in the OCU 2026 survey were Torrent, Vila-real and Santa Pola, all in the Valencian Community, and the single cheapest supermarket in the country was the Alcampo at Bonaire in Aldaia, on Valencia's western edge. The full city-by-city results are behind OCU's paywall, so we do not quote a Valencia city average.
How Much Do Internet and a Mobile Phone Cost?
A bundle of home fibre plus mobile line costs about 38 euros a month on average in Spain, according to the telecoms regulator CNMC's household panel (Q4 2025 data, published June 2026); bundles that add pay TV averaged about 77 euros. The CNMC does not publish an all-in household telecoms spend, so treat 38 euros as the typical price of the bundle most people buy, not a ceiling. Prices are national, so they are the same in Valencia as elsewhere in Spain.
What Do Households in the Valencian Community Actually Spend?
Households in the Valencian Community spent 13,704 euros per person in 2025, slightly below the Spanish average of 14,066 euros (INE, Encuesta de Presupuestos Familiares 2025, published 25 June 2026). That is about 1,142 euros per person a month. It is a region-wide average that includes owners, whose housing is counted as an imputed rent, so it is not a renter's budget, but it is the best official cross-check on the tables above. Nationally, housing and its bills took 33.2 percent of household spending and food 16.0 percent.
How Fast Are Prices Rising, and What Is the Minimum Wage?
Spain's annual inflation rate was 4.9 percent in September 2026 on the INE's flash estimate (published 29 September 2026), up from 4.3 percent in August. In the Valencian Community the annual rate was 4.1 percent in August 2026, the latest month with regional data (INE). Energy is the main driver this autumn: the electricity bill above is about 28 percent higher than a year earlier, and the regulated gas tariff rose in October.
The national minimum wage (salario mínimo interprofesional) is 1,221 euros a month in 14 payments, 17,094 euros a year, from 1 January 2026 (Real Decreto 126/2026, BOE of 19 February 2026). Spread over 12 months that is 1,424.50 euros gross. Set against the budgets above, the minimum wage covers a room in Valencia far more easily than a one-bedroom flat, which is why flat-sharing is normal here well beyond student age.
What Do Healthcare and Self-Employment Cost?
If you work in Spain as an employee or are registered as self-employed, public healthcare comes with your Social Security contributions at no extra charge. Two figures matter to newcomers who fall outside that:
- Public health cover by paying in (convenio especial): 60 euros a month under 65 and 157 euros a month from 65, for residents who have no other entitlement, according to the Ministerio de Sanidad (Real Decreto 576/2013). The ministry's page does not date these amounts, so confirm them with your regional health service before relying on them.
- Self-employed (autónomo) contributions: the minimum monthly contribution in 2026, for net earnings up to 670 euros a month, is 205.88 euros (a base of 653.59 euros at 31.5 percent, Orden PJC/297/2026, BOE of 31 March 2026). New autónomos can pay a reduced flat rate, widely reported as 80 euros a month for the first 12 months; we could not find the 2026 amount in an official source, so check it with the Seguridad Social.
Private health insurance is common among expats, and it is required for some visas, but prices depend on age, insurer and cover, and there is no official average to quote.
What Do These Numbers Leave Out?
The budgets on this page are built from items that have an official or named price. Several real costs do not, so they are left out rather than guessed:
- Eating out. The set lunch (menú del día), a coffee or a beer vary too much by bar and barrio for an honest single figure, and there is no official price series for them by city.
- School and childcare. State schools are free, but private and international schools charge fees that vary from school to school.
- Furniture and the move itself. The deposit, often one or more extra months of guarantee, and furnishing an unfurnished flat are one-off costs. Our renting guide covers what landlords can legally ask.
- Tax. Income tax, and the property tax (IBI) if you buy, depend on your income and the property.
About Numbeo and similar sites. Cost-of-living sites built from user submissions, such as Numbeo, are crowd-sourced estimates: anyone can enter a price, there is no fixed sample, and you cannot see when each price was recorded. They can be a rough cross-check for things like a restaurant meal, but we do not quote them as fact, and if one disagrees with the figures above, the official figure is the one with a known source and date.
Rent is most of the bill. Choose the area first.
Our area guide compares Valencia barrios and nearby towns on rent, sale prices, commute and who each suits, with the source and date of every figure.

How much is rent in Valencia?
Advertised rents in Valencia run from about 13 euros per square metre a month out at El Puig to 21.5 in L'Eixample (Fotocasa, July 2026), so a 60 m² one-bedroom costs roughly 860 to 1,060 euros in a cheaper city barrio such as Patraix and 1,080 to 1,320 euros in Ruzafa or Campanar. A room in a shared flat averages about 400 euros (idealista, Q1 2025, the newest figure we have).

How much do groceries cost in Valencia?
Spanish households spent 5,626 euros a year on food and non-alcoholic drink at home in 2025, about 188 euros a month per person (INE, Encuesta de Presupuestos Familiares, published June 2026). Food prices were 2.3 percent higher in August 2026 than a year earlier (INE). The salario mínimo interprofesional is 1,221 euros a month in 14 payments, or 17,094 euros a year, from 1 January 2026 (Real Decreto 126/2026, BOE of 19 February 2026). Spread over 12 months it is 1,424.50 euros gross.
Is Valencia expensive compared with the rest of Spain?
Cheaper than Madrid and Barcelona, mainly on rent: Valencia's popular central barrios ask about 20 euros per square metre (Fotocasa, July 2026) against a Madrid city average of 23.4 (idealista, September 2026). Households in the Valencian Community spent 13,704 euros per person in 2025, a little under the national 14,066 (INE), and the three cheapest places to shop in Spain in the OCU 2026 survey were all in the region.
Can I use Numbeo for the cost of living in Spain?
As a rough cross-check only. Numbeo figures are crowd-sourced estimates entered by users, with no fixed sample or date, so we do not use them as fact. This page uses official statistics, regulated tariffs, operators' fare pages and named market reports, each with its date.
