The short answer
- Cheapest good option: the free Spanish courses at Valencia's public adult-education centres (FPA), which cover A1 to A2 and prepare for B1. Late enrolment is allowed while places remain, until 30 November for the first term and 30 April for the second.
- Best value: a full-year course at the EOI València-Saïdia, the city's public language school, for €90 a year plus a one-off €25.50 file fee in 2026-27. The main windows are June and September, but leftover places are handed out from 5 October 2026 to 31 January 2027.
- Fastest option: an intensive group course at a private academy, usually sold as "20 lessons" (about 15 hours) a week for roughly €155 to €215 a week. You can start almost any Monday.
- Do I need Valencian? No, not to live here. Learn Spanish first; Valencian matters mainly for school-age children and public-sector jobs.
Valencia is a Spanish-speaking city with a second official language, Valencian, on its street signs and in its schools. Day to day, almost everything happens in Spanish: the centro de salud, the landlord, the comunidad de vecinos, the market. If you live here, Spanish is what turns errands into conversations. This guide is for residents: people who need Spanish for the doctor, the kids' school and, eventually, a Spanish passport. It compares every route in Valencia by price, hours and the date you have to act, because the most common mistake is not choosing the wrong course. It is missing the enrolment window for the cheap one.
What are the options for learning Spanish in Valencia?
There are five realistic routes in Valencia, and they differ more in timing than in quality. Public courses are cheap or free but follow the school year; private academies cost more but start any week.
| Option | Cost (2026-27) | Hours | When you can start |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public adult-education centre (FPA) | No tuition fee | Usually 2 to 4 hours a week | September; late places until 30 November and 30 April |
| EOI València-Saïdia | €90 a year, plus €25.50 the first time | 4 hours a week, late September to May | Apply June or September; leftover places until 31 January |
| Private academy, intensive group | About €155 to €215 a week | "20 lessons", about 15 hours a week | Most Mondays |
| Private academy, part-time group | About €100 to €200 per 4 weeks | About 2 to 4 hours a week | Monthly |
| Private 1:1 teacher | About €45 to €55 an hour, from about €33 in packs | Whatever you book | Any day |
| Intercambios and apps | Free or low cost | Your choice | Tonight |
Private academy figures are from the published price lists of four Valencia schools, checked in October 2026; most also charge a one-off enrolment fee of about €15 to €60. Public prices and dates are from the Generalitat Valenciana and the EOI València (links in Sources).
Can I learn Spanish for free in Valencia?
Yes. The Generalitat's public adult-education centres (centres de formació de persones adultes, FPA) run Spanish-as-a-foreign-language courses for adults. Under the 2026-27 regional instructions these cover levels A1 and A2 plus preparation for B1, usually 2 hours a week and up to 4 hours a week for Spanish courses, and some centres also prepare students for the DELE A2 and the CCSE citizenship exams. Courses for newcomers can last a single term. Students who attend at least 85% of classes and pass can ask for an A2 certificate. You must be 18 or over (16 in some cases).
Valencia city has about ten public FPA centres, from El Grau and Natzaret to Malvarrosa and Sant Marcel·lí, but not every centre teaches Spanish, so check before you go. At FPA Font de Sant Lluís, for example, new Spanish students enrolled from 7 to 9 September 2026 by appointment, bringing ID and two photos. No fee is mentioned on the centre's page and course materials are free, but confirm when you enrol.
Late places are allowed, with a deadline. The 2026-27 school year runs from 14 September 2026 to 11 June 2027. If a centre still has places, you can join until 30 November 2026 for the first term and until 30 April 2027 for the second, and waiting lists give priority to programmes for migrants and refugees (Generalitat instructions, DOGV 27 July 2026).
The city council's Universitat Popular also runs low-cost courses for registered residents aged 18 and over: in 2026-27 pre-registration ran from 22 June to 7 July with a lottery for places, at €25 or €55 per activity (Ajuntament de València). Its catalogue has included Spanish for foreigners in past years; check the current offer at your district's centre.
How does the EOI (Escola Oficial d'Idiomes) work for Spanish in Valencia?
The Escoles Oficials d'Idiomes are Spain's public language schools, and in Valencia city the one that teaches Spanish as a foreign language is the EOI València-Saïdia (Pla de la Saïdia 19). The city's other EOI, Quatre Carreres, teaches Valencian and other languages but not Spanish. Saïdia is the best price-to-quality option in Valencia: qualified teachers, a fixed syllabus, and official certificates valid across Spain, with the certification exam included in the fee for the levels that lead to one.
In 2026-27 Saïdia runs Spanish groups at 1A2, 2A2 (the A2 level split over two years, which is where beginners start), B1, B2 and C1. Classes are two sessions of 2 hours a week (Monday and Wednesday, or Tuesday and Thursday), with slots from morning to evening, and the year runs from 28 or 29 September 2026 to 26 or 27 May 2027. You must be 16 or over in the year you start. If you already know some Spanish, a €12 placement test puts you in the right level: the next Spanish test is on 16 October 2026, with sign-up from 6 to 13 October.

Do I need Valencian to live in Valencia?
No. Learn Spanish first. Valencia city is mostly Spanish-speaking day to day: shops, doctors, landlords and most offices deal with you in Spanish without a second thought. There is no recent official figure for the city alone, but council surveys reported in the press around 2019 and 2020 put the share of residents who habitually speak Valencian at a small minority, far below Spanish.
Valencian matters in three places. It appears on signs and in a lot of local government communication; it is required or valued for many public-sector jobs; and it is taught in every school.
What about my children's school?
Under the Valencian Region's Ley 1/2024, families in Valencia city choose Spanish or Valencian as the base language of their child's schooling, at the start of Infantil, of ESO and of Bachillerato. Both languages remain compulsory subjects, and from the third year of primary both are used to teach other subjects. Children who arrive from abroad or from another region can be exempted from being graded in Valencian in the year they arrive and the following year (up to three years with proof of temporary residence), although they still attend the class. For a full picture see our schools in Valencia guide.
Want to learn Valencian later? The FPA centres run Valencian courses from A1 upwards and can certify A1 and A2 through the Junta Qualificadora de Coneixements de Valencià, and the EOI teaches Valencian at the same €90 fee as Spanish (EOI Saïdia and Quatre Carreres, 2026-27). Speaking even a little is noticed and appreciated, especially by older neighbours.

How much do Spanish classes cost at a Valencia academy?
At a private academy in Valencia, the standard intensive course is sold as 20 lessons a week, where a lesson is usually 45 to 50 minutes, so about 15 hours of class. It typically costs €155 to €215 a week, or about €680 to €695 for four weeks. Part-time groups cost about €100 to €140 a month for two short lessons a week and about €200 to €260 per four weeks for 4 to 6 hours a week. Private one-to-one classes are usually €45 to €55 for a single hour, dropping to about €33 to €40 in packs. Expect a one-off enrolment fee of €15 to €60. (Published price lists of four Valencia schools, checked October 2026.)
What you pay for is flexibility and pace: smaller groups, start dates nearly every Monday, and timetables built around working adults. If you have a deadline, such as a job interview, a DELE date or a baby on the way and a paediatrician to talk to, an academy is the fastest route.
Many academies also sell long intensive packages tied to the Spanish student visa. Those are a different product: if you already live here on another permit, you do not need one.
How do I choose a Spanish school in Valencia?
Start with accreditation, then check that the timetable survives your actual week. The filters that matter:
- Instituto Cervantes accreditation. Schools in the Instituto Cervantes accreditation system (SACIC) are inspected on teaching, facilities and how honestly they inform students, and are re-evaluated every three years. The official list of accredited centres in Spain is on acreditacion.cervantes.es. It is the single best filter, and it is free to check.
- A real level test and a trial class. Good schools test your speaking, not just a grammar quiz, and let you sit in on a class before you pay for a month.
- Group size. Ask for the maximum, not the average. A smaller group is much of what you pay a private school for; in a big one you will mostly listen.
- Hours, not lessons. Many Valencia schools sell "20 lessons a week" where a lesson is 45 to 50 minutes, so the real figure is about 15 hours. Compare price per hour, not per week.
- A timetable you can keep. The most common reason adults quit is not the teacher. It is a class at 19:00 across town after a full workday. Pick the school near your home or office.
- Cancellation and refund terms. Read them before paying for a long package, especially discounted 12-week blocks.
- Exam preparation, if you need it. If citizenship is the goal, ask whether the school runs DELE A2 and CCSE preparation and whether it is an exam centre itself. Many Valencia schools are CCSE centres.
Are language apps enough to learn Spanish in Valencia?
Apps are good for vocabulary and for keeping a daily streak, but on their own they rarely get adults to conversation. They train recognition (tapping the right answer) far more than production (saying what you mean, under pressure, to a real person). Use them as the daily five minutes around a course or an intercambio, not instead of one. The best mix for most residents of Valencia is something structured, something social and something daily.
DELE, SIELE or CCSE: which Spanish exam do I need?
It depends on why you need a certificate. All three are run by the Instituto Cervantes, and the dates and prices are the same in Valencia as everywhere else in Spain:
| Exam | What it is | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| DELE | Diploma at one fixed level (A1 to C2), paper sessions on set dates; never expires | Spanish citizenship (A2 or higher), jobs, university |
| SIELE | Computer-based test that scores you across levels; book a slot at an exam centre; certificate valid five years | Jobs and universities that accept it, when you need a result fast |
| CCSE | Test on the Spanish constitution and society, 25 questions in 45 minutes, in Spanish | Spanish citizenship, alongside the DELE |
SIELE Global costs €155 at Spanish university exam centres in 2026 (Universidad Carlos III de Madrid price list), and you can register until 48 hours before a session. For citizenship, the rules name the DELE, so SIELE is not the route.

Pass mark 15 of 25.Where to sit it in Valencia: exams are held at Instituto Cervantes-approved exam centres. In Valencia city these include the Universitat de València's language service (Calle Serpis, DELE and CCSE), the Universitat Politècnica de València's Centro de Lenguas (DELE A2 to C1) and the Universidad Católica de Valencia's Instituto de Lenguas (DELE and CCSE), and a long list of private language schools hold CCSE sessions. You register online through the Instituto Cervantes and choose the centre and date during registration; the full list is on examenes.cervantes.es.
Do I need the DELE A2 for Spanish citizenship?
Yes, in most cases. To get Spanish nationality by residence you must pass two Instituto Cervantes exams: the DELE at level A2 or higher and the CCSE. A2 is a basic level: you can handle everyday situations, short conversations and simple forms. If you already hold a B1 or higher DELE, it counts.
- Exempt from the DELE: people whose nationality of origin (not acquired) is that of a Spanish-speaking country. They still take the CCSE.
- Exempt from both: applicants under 18 and people with judicially modified legal capacity.
- Dispensed from the CCSE: people who completed compulsory secondary education (ESO) in Spain.
Budget €223 for the two exams at 2026 prices (€138 for DELE A2 plus €85 for the CCSE), before the nationality application fee itself. Book the DELE A2 early: it is offered more often than other levels, but registration closes weeks ahead and popular Valencia centres fill up. This is general information, not legal advice; check your own case with the Ministry of Justice or an immigration lawyer.
How do language exchanges (intercambios) work in Valencia?
An intercambio is a free swap: you help someone with your language, they help you with Spanish. In Valencia they come in three forms.
- Weekly exchange nights in bars. Organisers take over a bar for the evening, hand out name tags showing the languages you speak and want, and rotate tables. Entry is usually free or the price of a drink. Search Meetup or local Facebook groups for "intercambio Valencia"; most run in Ruzafa, El Carmen and Benimaclet.
- One-to-one tandem partners. You meet the same person regularly, for example 30 minutes in Spanish, then 30 minutes in English. Tandem apps and university notice boards are the usual way to find one; Valencia's large student population makes partners easy to find. This is where real progress happens, because the same partner remembers your mistakes.
- Neighbourhood life. A falla, a choir, a walking group or a class at your local centre gives you Spanish every week with people who will not switch to English.
Make intercambios work: arrive with three things you want to be able to say this week (calling the landlord about the boiler, booking at the centro de salud, chatting at the school gate) and practise exactly those. Valencia's exchange scene is very international, so it is easy to end up speaking English all night; insist on the half-and-half rule.
How long does it take to become conversational in Spanish?
For an English speaker, comfortable everyday conversation (around B1) usually takes several hundred hours of study and practice, and most adults living in Valencia reach it in one to two years of steady part-time effort. For comparison, the US Foreign Service Institute puts Spanish in its easiest group for English speakers and plans about 30 weeks of full-time training, 23 class hours a week plus self-study, to reach professional working proficiency.
Living in Valencia helps, because daily life here happens in Spanish, but plenty of residents still spend years working and socialising in English. What speeds it up is daily contact you cannot avoid: phoning instead of emailing, ordering at the counter, joining a neighbourhood activity, and reading local news in Spanish once your level allows it.

Most adults living in Valencia get there in one to two years of steady part-time effort. The US Foreign Service Institute plans about 30 weeks of full-time training for Spanish to reach professional working proficiency.
Are language apps enough to learn Spanish?
Not on their own. Apps build vocabulary and a daily habit, but they train recognising answers more than speaking. Pair an app with a course, a tutor or a weekly intercambio so you actually practise saying things to real people.
Do I need to learn Valencian to live in Valencia?
No. Spanish is enough for daily life in Valencia city, where only a small minority of residents habitually speak Valencian. Learn Spanish first, and add Valencian if you have children in local schools, want a public-sector job or want to integrate more deeply.
