Christmas in Valencia: An Overview

Christmas in Valencia runs for about six weeks, from the lights switch-on in late November to Three Kings' Day on 6 January. The centre of it all is the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, which gets a giant tree, an ice rink, a life-size nativity scene and, on 31 December, the city's free New Year's Eve party. For children, the biggest night is not the 24th but 5 January, when the Three Kings arrive by sea at La Marina and parade through the centre.

This guide is written for people who live in Valencia and are spending the holidays here: what is on, which days the city shuts, and how to fit the festive season around an ordinary working December.

Quick answers

Public holidays in Valencia over Christmas 2026-27: Tuesday 8 December (Inmaculada), Friday 25 December (Christmas Day), Friday 1 January 2027 and Wednesday 6 January 2027 (Reyes). Sunday 6 December (Constitution Day) falls on a Sunday and is not moved to the Monday in the Comunitat Valenciana in 2026. 24 and 31 December are normal working days, but most shops close early. 26 December is not a holiday in Valencia (it is in Catalonia).

Confirm before you plan: The holidays above come from the Generalitat's official labour calendars for 2026 and 2027, and El Gordo's date from the lottery operator, so they are fixed. The lights switch-on date, the ice rink and market dates, and the exact Cabalgata times and route for 2027 are set by the Ajuntament and published in its Christmas programme, which usually comes out in November. Times quoted from 2025-26 are there to show the usual shape, not this year's schedule.

What is closed in Valencia on 25 December, 1 January and 6 January?

On 25 December, 1 January and 6 January, most shops, supermarkets, banks and public offices in Valencia are closed, and the Mercado Central, which never opens on Sundays or public holidays, is shut too. Metrovalencia and EMT buses run, but on holiday timetables. Bakeries, petrol-station shops and some convenience stores open for part of the day.

On 24 and 31 December, which are not public holidays, shops open in the morning and most close early in the afternoon so staff can get home for the family dinner. Many restaurants close on the evening of the 24th and lunchtime on the 25th, or only take bookings for a set menu. 8 December (a Tuesday in 2026) closes the same things as any public holiday.

Large stores in Valencia city are allowed to open on a limited number of Sundays and holidays each year, from a list the Generalitat publishes; December usually has several of them. If you need a big shop on a holiday, check that list first rather than assuming the supermarket is open.

The three-weekend trap: In 2026-27 Christmas Day and New Year's Day both fall on a Friday, and Reyes on a Wednesday. That means shops close Friday, open Saturday, and many close again on Sunday. Do the big shop on Thursday 24 and Thursday 31 December in the morning, and on Tuesday 5 January.

What is in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento at Christmas?

The Plaza del Ayuntamiento is Valencia's Christmas living room. In 2025-26 it had a 25-metre tree, a decorated town hall facade, an ice rink (11:00 to 23:00 daily, closing at 20:00 on the 24th and 31st; €10 for a 30-minute session with skates included), a carousel (€4 a ride) and a life-size nativity scene by a falla artist, in front of which the Three Kings stop during the Cabalgata. The ice rink and carousel ran from 28 November to 6 January.

The city's Christmas lights stayed on every evening from 18:00 to midnight, and until 3:00 on the biggest nights of the season. The lights reach every district, not just the centre, so your own neighbourhood will have its own decorations.

The switch-on itself is a free show in the square: in 2025 it was a live music performance, a countdown, confetti and fireworks, timed to the feast of Santa Cecilia, patron of musicians. Get there 45 minutes early if you want to see the stage.

Where are the Christmas markets in Valencia?

Valencia does not have one big German-style market. It has several smaller ones, each with its own character. These are the ones that ran in 2025-26; most return every year with similar dates.

Where can you see belenes (nativity scenes) in Valencia?

The best-known belén in Valencia is the one made by the Asociación de Belenistas de València in the Salón de Cristal inside the town hall. In 2025-26 it covered 40 square metres with about 400 handmade figures and over 200 animals, was free to visit from 2 December to 3 January, and was closed on public holidays and on 31 December and 5 January. Weekday visits were mornings only (9:00 to 14:00), with afternoon sessions at weekends and over Christmas week, so check the timetable before you go with children.

Two life-size nativity scenes made by falla artists stand outdoors in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento and the Plaza de la Reina. The Belenistas also set up smaller scenes in places you can walk between in an hour, including the Museo Nacional de Cerámica (Palacio del Marqués de Dos Aguas), the Palau de la Generalitat on C/ Caballeros, the Diputación in Plaza de Manises and the Santo Domingo church in Plaza de Tetuán.

How does El Gordo work, and what happens on Nochebuena?

The Lotería de Navidad draw is on Tuesday 22 December 2026, starting at 9:00 at the Teatro Real in Madrid. Schoolchildren from the San Ildefonso school sing out the numbers and prizes for most of the morning, and offices, bars and shops across Valencia have it on in the background. A full ticket (décimo) costs €20. Most residents end up holding small shares (participaciones) of a number bought by their workplace, their falla, their gym or their local bar. Being offered one is a sign you have been accepted into the group; saying yes is cheap and sociable.

Nochebuena (24 December) is the main family meal of Christmas in Spain, eaten late in the evening. Some families go to Midnight Mass (Misa del Gallo). The streets are quiet that night, which surprises people used to going out on Christmas Eve.

What happens on New Year's Eve in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento?

Valencia's official Nochevieja is free and happens in two parts in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. In 2025 it went like this:

The ritual everywhere in Spain is the twelve grapes: one grape on each of the twelve chimes at midnight, for twelve lucky months. Supermarkets sell small tins of peeled, seedless grapes for exactly this. The square gets very full, so if you are with children or want to see the fireworks without the crush, the Turia riverbed near Montolivet or the Ciutat de les Arts is calmer.

When and where is the Cabalgata de Reyes in Valencia?

The Cabalgata de Reyes is on the evening of 5 January every year; in 2027 that is a Tuesday. Valencia's Kings arrive by sea: they land at La Marina, by the clock building (Edificio del Reloj), are officially welcomed, and then join the parade into the centre.

In January 2026 the reception at La Marina was at 16:30 and the parade left at 17:30. The route ran along Navarro Reverter, Porta de la Mar, General Palanca, General Tovar, calle de la Paz, Plaza de la Reina and San Vicente to the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, finishing on Marqués de Sotelo. There, the Kings stop at the life-size nativity, step out onto the town hall balcony, and then receive children in the Salón de Cristal. Floats throw thousands of sweets, so children bring a bag (or an upturned umbrella).

Many districts and pedanías hold their own smaller cabalgatas the same evening: in 2026 these included El Palmar and El Saler, where the Kings are welcomed at the village jetty, plus Benimàmet, Borbotó and Massarrojos. They are far easier with small children than the centre. Before the big night, the Paje Real (the Kings' page) tours neighbourhoods collecting letters, and in 2025-26 La Central in Parc Central was a free Christmas space where children could hand in their letters.
